HCA is a Workplace Partner for Life

On March 7, 2003, Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Tommy Thompson announced that April will be observed as National Donate Life Month to help raise public awareness of the critical need for organ, tissue, marrow and blood donation. Over eighty thousand people in the United States are waiting for life-saving organ transplants. Each day, approximately 63 people receive an organ transplant, but another 16 people on the waiting list die because of an insufficient number of available organs. Thousands of people are in need of life-saving or life-enhancing surgical procedures that require donor tissues such as bone, skin, corneas, veins, fascia, heart valves, tendons and ligaments.

On March 14, 2003, HCA became a Workplace Partner for Life, a campaign HHS initiated to encourage companies to build awareness for voluntary organ, tissue, marrow and blood donations. HCA's employees across the country are concerned with donation awareness. "The decision to become a Workplace Partner for Life clearly communicates HCA's commitment to the 'care and improvement of human life' and makes me proud to be a part of the HCA family,'" says Patty Boyd, Director Special Services at Presbyterian/St. Luke's Medical Center. "The need for organs and tissues is far greater than the supply. Donation is a wonderful act that gives donor families something positive in very difficult situations."

By signing a donor card or driver's license and confirming the decision with your family, you can say "yes" to organ and tissue donation.
